Shake, Rattle, and Scroll

Since I met with you all last week it’s been a bit crazy here in the north east last tuesday we got a small earthquake and over the weekend we were smacked by hurricane irene. But it hasn’t been this crazy string of event’s that’s got me so excited this week, it’s the new role that social media is playing in my life that’s really got me thinking… We are truly living in world that is more closely connected than ever before and it’s about time we really start capitalizing on that.

Social media isn’t just about what someone ate for lunch, it’s not just a place to post cute pictures of our kids. Facebook, twitter, google plus and other social media sites truly are tools we all SHOULD be using to get information from the people we trust the most… Our friends and family.

So I thought this week would be a perfect opportunity to introduce you to a new tool that I’ve just learned about that helps us to tap into the benefits of social, to be able to find the relevant things that our friends may be posting on just about anything that we’re interested in. I am Jeff Clark, today is Tuesday August 30th 2011 and it’s time for another episode of Tech Tip Tuesday…

It’s Good to Have GROUPies

Ahhhh The internet it’s… a beautiful thing. It’s a place of discovery, it’s a place for us to share and be shared with. We can create a website in seconds and connect with friends in realtime. One of the biggest trends on the web right now seems to be the idea of creating groups.

In our real lives we have different groups of people we share things with, there are our friends and family, our work buddies, our church group, and the list goes on and on.

In this weeks Tech Tip I’m sharing a new site for organizing the types of information you share with these groups. It’s easy to use and best of all it’s free.

Finally! A Volume Button

My relationship with social media has always been sort of a love hate relationship. I love what facebook and twitter allow me to do in connecting with friends, family, acquaintances, but I have a real frustration.

As useful as these tools are I have really grown to hate all of the noise that social media gives me. The one thing that has really been missing in my opinion is a volume button.

Sometimes I just want to turn down the volume on those people who are constantly talking about their cats maybe even mute them, but always have the option to turn their volume back up just in case.

In this weeks Tech Tip I’m sharing with you a new social service that not only let’s me control the volume of my social stream but control just how loud I’m talking and who I’m talking to.

If you’re looking for an invite to google plus let me know I’ve got em and I’m willing to share 🙂

My News, My Terms!

As great as the web has been for getting my news one frustration is just how quickly everything moves. Often times I will find an article that looks like something I’d be interested in reading but due to time constraints I can’t read it until later. Unfortunately later when I have time to get caught up on my news. I may not be at that same computer and furthermore when I go back to that same page where I saw that article in the first place it’s all filled up with the most recent stories and I find myself digging around in search of that one article that I REALLY wanted to read and more often than not I just give up and read the other stuff.

In this weeks Tech Tip I’ll share with you how I’ve been combating this annoyance to make sure that I get the best of the web on my terms.
